WorkpLace Hazard Recognition Program

A fall hazardous condition is a condition that has the potential to either cause injury to someone or to cause damage to equipment/facility.  Some familiar examples might be water/oil on the floor or uncoiled hoses/extension cords across travel paths.  Recognizing hazardous conditions is a challenge and requires awareness and practice.  This program is focused on recognizing fall hazards.

How do you determine what fall hazards to place on your hazard survey forms?  Several ways:

Fall Hazards that were a problem

Injuries in the past due to a fall hazard

Damaged equipment due to a fall hazard

Near miss having occurred due to a fall hazard

Teams hold brainstorming sessions to determine fall hazards, and

'What' questions can be asked to determine fall hazards.  Questions such as:

1.   What is the scariest part of your job or work place?

2.   What is the most difficult part of your job to accomplish?

3.   What would your mother be concerned about if she saw what you did at work and where you were working?

4.   What if you had to bring in your child (grandchild, niece, nephew) at the age of 6 and put them to work doing what you do; where could he/she get hurt?

5.   What if you had to access the inside of this equipment?

Almost all of the above methods identify hazardous conditions after the fact.  That is, the conditions are recognized after an injury or incident has occurred.  The exception are the last two methods, brainstorming and 'what' questions.  This training will help you to be able to identify hazards before they are identified by an incident or injury.
